After obtaining his Ph.D. from Waseda University, Komaba joined Iwate University in 1998. From 2003 to 2004, he also worked at Institut de Chimie de la Mati\u00e8re Condens\u00e9e de Bordeaux, France, as a post-doctoral research fellow.
