The University of Sheffield has constructed the world’s largest grid-connected Lithium Titanate (LTO) battery designed to provide stability in the UK’s most challenging 11.5kV location: Fault currents regularly exceed 1,000A. Our battery is rated at 2MW/1MWh and is constructed from ~8000x20Ah Toshiba SCiB cells. A major problem is monitoring the State-of-Health of thousands of cells remotely. The existing 100 Mbps Ethernet Virtual Circuit connection costs £23k per year and expanding this to transmit detailed impedance information would be ridiculously expensive. Research is underway to develop “low information” methods of transmitting State-of-Health information.
