Biography

Ahmed Ennaoui currently serves as Research Director for PV-technology at the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of the Qatar Foundation in Doha, Qatar. At QEERI, Ahmed Ennaoui is leading solar energy group and directs projects for Emerging Thin Film Photovoltaic solution. He is appointed in the rank of professor in Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Doha, Qatar, delivring courses on Solar Photovoltaic Technolgy at College of Science and Engineering. Prior to joining QEERI, Ennaoui conducted research for his Habilitation (from 1983 to 1987) on iron disulfide FeS2 for solar energy conversion working with Prof. Helmut Tributsch at “Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin , Abteilung Solare Energetik und Materialforschung“, then he worked as Postdoc, and senior scientist focusing on the development of highly textured 2D compounds (2H-WS2 and 2H-MoS2, EU-project Joule II), he gains expertise in the set-up and operation of a state-of-the-art laboratory at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute (HMI) with capabilities for low cost processing of novel materials, non vacuum and (photo)-electrochemical methods. He is appointed as head of a research group in the institute Heterogenious Material systems with Prof. Martha Lux-Steiner at “Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, HZB“. His R&D activities are focused on low cost processing of thin film solar cells. Ennaoui has served as full professor of physics at University Mohamed V (Morocco), and was visiting Professor at Osaka University, he taught several courses in Material sciences, Photovoltaic and (Photo) -electrochemistry. Ennaoui was active in using scientific research as a bridge between Morocco and different countries and helped several Moroccan graduate students to work abroad. During his career at HZB, he managed in his group several European research projects, (JOULE II, CISLINE, NEBULES, ATHLET, CHEETAH), as well as several projects financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF (NEUMAS, NANOPV). He worked on several feasibility studies with industry partners (Atotech, Avancis, Boch Solar). He invented and patented new Cadmium free buffer layers for thin film Cu-chalcopyrite solar cell and achieving high efficiency solar cells (above 16% efficiency for lab scale). He worked solving industry-oriented topics and to reduce the Fab-to-Lab gap and obtained 13% for large-scale modules (120cmx60cm). His research interests include advanced materials, non-vacuum techniques, nanosynthesis, photoelectrochemistry, and solid-state devices. Recently, he is exploring ink formulation of Cu-Kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 and related printed solar cell and achieved in his group printed CZTS solar cell with efficiency above 6%. He authored and co-authored more than 200 research papers and 4 patents (with h-index 33). He is serving as president of the scientific council of IRESEN (Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles). He is permanently serving in the Editorial Board of Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, Journal of New Technology and Materials, Journal of Optics and Photonics. He is member of EU-PVTP and served as referee for scientific evaluation and expertise of research proposal for Technology Foundation STW (Dutch funding agency for academic research in the field of applied sciences) and scientific evaluation and expertise of the program “sinergia” lunched by “Schweizerische Nationalfonds(SNF)”.
