Biography<\/h2>\n

Dr. Rachid Yazami, a native of Fez, Morocco, received his MS in electrochemistry and PhD in graphite intercalation compounds for lithium batteries at France\u2019s Grenoble Institute of Technology, and then began his career at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), also in Grenoble, where he rose to research director. He has been a visiting associate in materials science and chemistry at Caltech, in collaboration with JPL\/NASA, for 10 years, and in 2010 joined the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as a visiting professor in materials science. His current research addresses lithium batteries and \u201cbeyond lithium\u201d future battery technologies, including liquid anode alkali metal-air and fluoride-ion batteries.
\nHe is a founder of CFX battery, Inc. (now Contour Energy Systems), a primary and rechargeable lithium and fluoride battery start-up in\u00a0Azusa, California<\/a>; director of energy storage programs at the Energy Research Institute; and principal investigator of battery research at the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) Center for Electromobility, jointly managed by NTU and the Technological University of Munich. In 2011 he founded KVI PTE, Ltd., a start-up in Singapore dedicated to battery life and safety enhancement for mobile electronics, large energy storage, and electric vehicle applications.
\nIn 1979\u20131980 Yazami invented the lithium graphite anode, now used in commercial Li-ion batteries, a $20 billion\/year business. He is the co-author involved in over 200 published papers and the co-inventor of over 125 patents related to lithium primary and rechargeable batteries and on new battery chemistry based on fluoride ion. He served as the President of the International Battery Association (IBA) and as a Member of International Scientific Advisory Board of several international meetings, including the International Meetings on Lithium Batteries (IMLB). Yazami is the recipient of several research awards, including with NATO (Science for Peace Award), NASA (two Technical Innovation Awards), IBA (Research Award) and the Hawaii Battery Conference. He is the main Founder of CFX Battery, Inc. (now Contour Energy Systems, Inc.) a Caltech-CNRS start up company in Azusa, California and of KVI PTE LTD in Singapore. Yazami is the winner of 2012 IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies.
\nIn 2014 Rachid Yazami,\u00a0John Goodenough<\/a>, Yoshio Nishi and\u00a0Akira Yoshino<\/a>\u00a0were awarded the\u00a0Draper Prize<\/a>\u00a0by The\u00a0National Academy of Engineering<\/a>\u00a0for pioneering and leading the groundwork for today\u2019s lithium ion battery. The prize, which is in its 25th year, includes a $500,000 award.[3]<\/a>
\nYazami received the Royal Medal (Wissam Malaki) of Intellectual Competency from HM the King of Morocco Mohamed VI, during the Throne Day on July 30, 2014.
\nIn March 2016, Rachid Yazami received an award as a finalist of the Marius Lavet Prize of Inventing-Engineers, Paris, France
\nOn July 14, 2014 Yazami was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Legion d\u2019Honneur of France.
