Microgrids (MG) are extremely flexible low voltage (LV) networks capable of operating interconnected with the upstream medium voltage (MV) network or autonomously (islanded) through the appropriated coordination of the locally available resources. During autonomous operation, MG operation is supported by controllers hierarchically organized to provide primary and secondary frequency regulation. The presentation focus on the experimental validation of MG autonomous operation conditions while considering coordinated control strategies exploiting the role of Electric Vehicles (EV), storage devices, microgeneration units and responsive loads in order to ensure a seamless transition to islanding mode. The development and validation of MG service restoration procedures will be also addressed.

Biography

Luís Miguel Miranda is researcher on power electronic converters mainly with application in smart grids and energy storage systems. He is currently responsible for the Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory (SGEVL) of INESCTEC, a portuguese R&D institution. His main domains of research are related with electric vehicle charging, hardware design and protoyping of electric and electronic equipment and testing of distributed energy resources using power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL). He holds an internacional patent related to matrix converters modulation and is author or co-author of several conference and journal papers.
