Challenges and opportunities in the electronic properties of two-dimensional materials: when theory meets experiment
No doubt that Graphene sparked a flurry of studies on two-dimensional (2D) materials, which are gathering a fast increasing interest from a wide scientific community. These 2D materials are not only bringing tremendous and fascinating new functionalities but at times, they may challenge our deep understanding of materials. In just a couple of decades, significant contributions have been made to the understanding and applications of 2D materials. The aim of this workshop is to gather international renowned scientists working on 2D materials and devices, both theorists and experimentalists to promote collaborations and tackle specific challenges for this vibrant field. The workshop focuses on fundamental understanding and relevant scientific advances in the theoretical and experimental aspects of two-dimensional (2D) materials for the realization of devices with a variety of functionalities. We will discuss various approaches for tuning the electronic properties of 2D compounds and present predictive simulations and modeling through layer thickness, strain engineering and doping for the fabrication of atomic-scale mono and few layers van der Waals devices with controllable mechanical, electrical and optical properties that can be stable, flexible, and transparent for several applications such as photovoltaics, light emitting diodes and gas sensor, to name a few. The workshop and the related tutorials aim also at training young scientists in state of the art computational tools relevant to the study of 2D materials.

Vocabulary:

Two-dimensional material – a material in which the atomic organization and bond strength along two-dimensions are similar and much stronger than along a third dimension;
Van der Waals solid – a material whose crystal structure features neutral, single-atom-thick or polyhedral-thick layers of atoms with covalent or ionic bonding along two dimensions and van der Waals bonding along the third;
Nanosheet – stacked assembly or hybrid composite formed from single to many layers of two-dimensional materials;
Graphane– a single layer of a two-dimensional hexagonal network of sp3-bonded carbon atoms in which every carbon is bonded to a terminal hydrogen, alternatingly above and below the layer;
Van der Waals epitaxy – the growth of a thin layer on the surface of a substrate in which the material substrate are held together by weak van der Waals forces.
